An Identity Scam That Anyone Could Fall Victim To

Picture this: You’re browsing social media during your daily dose of mindless scrolling and reflexively, you click on an ad directly from for 50% off everything in the store!

Let’s be real, Who wouldn’t click on it? I know I would… Macy’s never has 50% off of everything!

Shortly thereafter, you begin to notice unexplainable transactions on your account, your credit score has drastically decreased, and as if that’s not bad enough, you’re receiving random pop-ups while browsing the web on your computer.

Whether you work for a tech firm, a brick and mortar company, or are a stay at home parent or a retiree, we all face cyber threats every day. Not only can these threats cause a great deal of frustration, but they can cause serious financial damage to those affected.

On November 27th, 2018, the U.S. Department of Justice decentralized a major breach called 3ve caused by two botnets, Boaxxe and Kovter. These bots duplicated ads you would see on a typical website to gain over $20 million in profit over the course of several years. The scheme, carried out by eight professional cybercriminals, targeted Digital Advertising Agencies using 1,900 servers to falsify over 5,000 domains. A total of 1.7 million PCs were compromised during this time. The DOJ tells it best.
