Leadership

Karl Nelson, Founder, CEO

Years ago, Karl had an epiphany in a microelectronic engineering cleanroom.

Wearing a full cleanroom suit, Karl could only say hello or make eye contact with colleagues through a plastic visor, day after day. He was cut off from meaningful human contact and realized there had to be a better way to work with people and help them solve problems.

A deeply entrepreneurial spirit, Karl broke away from the cleanroom and fused his engineering background and IT experience in 2005 when he founded Clinic IT. Karl strongly believes in the importance of leading by example and works closely with others to build lean, agile, and highly motivated teams that get work done, fast.  As a result of Karl’s leadership, Clinic IT blends technology expertise with decency, consideration, and thoughtfulness as a way to engage customers and help them grow their business.

When Karl isn’t tinkering with technology challenges, he’s spending time outdoors with his family doing what they love most: scuba diving in Southeast Asia, snowboarding on the world's mountains, or simply bicycling around Prospect Park.

Abel Laura, CTO

Looking for creative freedom, a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day, and a place to call his own, Abel Laura left a larger corporation and joined Clinic IT in 2008. Abel helped to develop a growing business and was able to study, test, and deploy new technologies, while simultaneously creating his dream job. He’s a talented problem solver and network architect who has saved everyone a lot of time and headaches. But it’s his honorary place as “office sommelier” that contributes greatly to his popularity around the office.

Abel has a Masters in Information Technology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he also earned his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering and Computer Science.

Kenny Diaz, CIO

A risk taker and rule bender, Kenny Diaz joined Clinic IT in 2008 for the love of technology and a passion for solving problems. Kenny is the company’s Chief Information Officer, where he’s responsible for Cybersecurity—both in terms of policy and technical implementation—and leading a team of Clinic IT engineers, who pride themselves on understanding business needs and challenges from the customer’s perspective.

Kenny is a gifted mentor with an infectiously positive attitude. He’s eager to grow people, share knowledge, and build capacity for engineers and customers alike. In his spare time, Kenny geeks out on podcasts like Security Now and This Week in Tech, and will play basketball against anyone, anytime.

Insatiably curious, Kenny is continually advancing his domain expertise by studying computer science and cybersecurity for the sheer joy of it.
